This is an estimate, not your score. Nothing on this page contacts a credit bureau, and no PAN is asked for. It puts the same six questions to you that the bureaus' own models weigh, and shows roughly where that lands — so you can see which factor is holding you back before you pull the real thing. Getting your actual score free is further down, and it takes minutes.
Weightings follow what the bureaus publish about their own models. The output is a band, never a single number — a point figure would imply a precision this cannot have.
Why This Is an Estimate and Not a Score
A credit score is computed by a bureau — TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark — from the accounts your lenders actually report to it. Every EMI, every card balance, every closure. No website can reproduce that from six answers, and any site claiming to has either connected to a bureau or is guessing.
What this tool does is different and still useful: it applies the published weightings to what you already know about yourself. The band is not the interesting part. The table underneath it is, because it shows which factor is costing you the most — and that's the thing you can act on.
What the Score Is Actually Made Of
| Factor | Roughly How Much It Counts | What Moves It | How Fast |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repayment history | The heaviest single factor | Paying every instalment on time | Continuous, slow to repair |
| Credit utilisation | Second heaviest | Balance on the statement date | 1–2 billing cycles |
| Length of credit history | Moderate | Time, and keeping old accounts open | 6–12 months |
| Recent enquiries | Smaller, but visible | Not applying for a while | 3–6 months |
| Credit mix | Smallest | Having both instalment and revolving credit | Not worth borrowing for |
| Settled or written-off account | Overrides much of the above | Only time | Years |
How to Get Your Real Score, Free
The Reserve Bank of India requires every credit information company to give each person one free full credit report every calendar year. There are four of them, so that's four free reports a year. Most people use none.
| Bureau | Free Entitlement | Worth Knowing |
|---|---|---|
| TransUnion CIBIL | One full report a year | The score most Indian lenders quote |
| Experian | One full report a year | Widely used alongside CIBIL |
| Equifax | One full report a year | Not every lender reports to all four |
| CRIF High Mark | One full report a year | Strong coverage of smaller lenders |
Go to each bureau's own website and ask for the free annual report. Two things to know before you do:
- Checking your own report is a soft enquiry and does not affect your score. Only a lender's formal application check counts against you.
- The entitlement is the full report, not just the number. The report is where errors are visible, and the number alone tells you nothing about why.
Read the Report, Not Just the Score
Errors on Indian credit reports are common, and every one of them costs you on an application. Four worth looking for:
| Error | Why It Hurts | How to Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A closed loan still showing as running | Eats the EMI-to-income headroom a new application needs | Dispute with the bureau, free, about 30 days |
| An account you don't recognise | Reporting mix-up, or borrowing in your name | Raise immediately with the bureau and the lender |
| A payment marked late that wasn't | Repayment history is the heaviest factor | Dispute with proof of payment |
| A settled account that should read closed | "Settled" costs you for years | Dispute with the lender's no-dues letter |
Disputes are raised with the bureau directly and are free. Allow around 30 days — which is why this is worth doing well before you plan to apply, not in the week you need the loan.
What Actually Moves the Number, and How Fast
| What You Change | Before It Shows | How Much It Moves |
|---|---|---|
| Pay card balances down before the statement date | 1–2 billing cycles | Large |
| Correct an error on the report | About 30 days | Large, where one exists |
| Stop applying for new credit | 3–6 months | Moderate |
| Clear an overdue account | 1–2 months to update | Large, then slow recovery |
| Keep every EMI on time | Continuous | Largest of all, over time |
| Let a thin file age | 6–12 months | Moderate |
| Close an old credit card | Immediate | Usually negative |
That last row surprises people. Closing an old card reduces your total available credit, which raises the proportion you're using, and it shortens your credit history. Tidying up your wallet is one of the few well-intentioned moves that reliably sets the score back. Reduce the limit instead if the card tempts you.
The statement date, not the due date
One detail is worth more than most credit advice put together, and almost nobody is told it.
Your card issuer reports your balance to the bureau as it stood on the statement date, not after you pay the bill. So someone who spends heavily and clears the bill in full every month without fail can still show high utilisation month after month — and be priced as a heavy borrower despite never paying a rupee of card interest.
Paying down part of the balance before the statement generates is what changes the number that gets recorded.
What Your Score Is Actually Worth on a Loan
A score doesn't decide approval on its own. It sets the band your rate is drawn from, and then your employer, how your salary is paid, and what you already repay each month decide where in that band you land. Two applicants with the same score are routinely quoted differently for exactly those reasons.
Which is why the honest answer to "what loan can I get at 720" is a range, and why our pages are organised by score band rather than by a single promise:
The four free reports nobody uses
Every year, four bureaus each owe you one full credit report at no cost. That's four chances to find the closed loan still reported as running, the account you don't recognise, or the payment wrongly marked late.
The people who discover these errors almost always discover them after a rejection, when there's already a hard enquiry on the file and 30 days of dispute ahead. Pulling the report first costs nothing and takes ten minutes.
Questions this page gets asked
Does checking my own score reduce it?
No. Checking your own report is a soft enquiry and has no effect. Only a lender's formal application check is a hard enquiry, and those are what accumulate.
Why is my CIBIL score different from my Experian score?
Different models, and often different data — not every lender reports to all four bureaus. A gap of a few tens of points between bureaus is normal. Most Indian lenders look at CIBIL.
I have never borrowed. Why do I have no score?
Because there's nothing to score. Bureaus report this as NH or −1, and it isn't the same as a low score. A secured card against a fixed deposit, or a small consumer durable loan repaid on time, builds a file within about six months.
How long does a missed payment stay on my report?
Payment history is generally retained for several years. The weight it carries fades as it ages and as clean months accumulate, which is why recovery is gradual rather than sudden.
Can I pay someone to fix my score?
No. Nobody can remove accurate information from a credit report, and any service promising to is either doing nothing or filing false disputes on your behalf. Correcting a genuine error is free and you can do it yourself.
Is a settled account the same as a closed one?
No, and the difference is expensive. "Closed" means you repaid in full. "Settled" means the lender accepted less, and it sits on your report for years where every lender sees it.
What is a good credit score in India?
750 and above is comfortable across most lenders. Above roughly 750, further improvement moves your rate less than fixing your obligations or your employer category would.
How often is my score updated?
Lenders typically report monthly, so your score can change every month. A change you make today may take a full billing cycle to appear.
Does a high score guarantee approval?
No. Existing obligations, employer category and verification all still apply. A clean report with no headroom left is a common decline.
Do utility bills or rent affect my score?
Generally not in India — bureaus score credit accounts. Rent and utilities don't usually report.
Does closing a loan improve my score?
Closing it properly and getting it reported as closed helps your obligation headroom. But a closed account also stops adding fresh positive history, so it's not automatically an improvement to the score itself.
Can I check my score without a PAN?
Not realistically. PAN is how bureaus identify you.
Is a free score from an app the same as the bureau's?
Often it's the bureau's own score supplied through a partner, but not always, and the free version may be a summary rather than the full report. The report is where errors are visible — get it from the bureau.
How many points does one missed payment cost?
There's no published figure and it depends on the rest of your file. A thin file loses more from one miss than a long clean one does.
Does checking through a lender's eligibility tool hurt?
Soft eligibility checks don't. A full application does. If you're unsure which one you're using, ask.
My score dropped without me doing anything. Why?
Usually a card balance reported higher than usual, a new enquiry, or an account closing. Pull the report and compare — the cause is visible on it.
Should I take a loan just to build credit?
Not for the mix factor alone, which is the smallest component. A secured card is the cheaper way to build history from nothing.
How long until a new account starts helping?
About six months of reported activity before it contributes meaningfully, and longer before history length starts working for you.
Can errors really change my score much?
Yes. A closed loan still reported as running can cost you an approval outright, because it consumes the obligation headroom a new application needs.
Does the estimate on this page affect anything?
No. It contacts nothing and records nothing. It's arithmetic on your own answers.
The Bottom Line
No website can tell you your credit score without a bureau behind it, and this one doesn't pretend to. What it can do is show you which of the six factors is holding you back — and for most people the answer is utilisation, which moves inside a billing cycle, or an error on the report, which is free to fix.
Pull your free report from each of the four bureaus. Read it, don't just look at the number. Fix the closed loan still showing as running. Pay cards down before the statement date rather than the due date. And keep your oldest account open, whatever else you do.
