What You Need Before You Check
Every tracking route asks for one of these. If you have none of them, that's the first problem to solve.
- Application reference number — issued on submission, by SMS or email. The most reliable identifier.
- Registered mobile number — used with date of birth on many trackers.
- PAN — some issuers accept it in place of the reference number.
- Date of birth — almost always required alongside whichever of the above you use.
If you never received a reference number, check spam and your SMS history from the day you applied. If it genuinely isn't there, the application may not have submitted at all — which is worth establishing before you spend a fortnight waiting for something that was never in a queue.
Four Ways to Check
| Route | What You Need | Detail Given | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer's tracking page | Reference number or mobile + DOB | Stage label, sometimes a reason | Quick daily-level check |
| Issuer's mobile app | Login, or reference number | Usually the most detailed | Existing customers |
| SMS or WhatsApp | Registered mobile | Brief status only | Convenience |
| Customer service call | Reference number + identity check | The most specific — a person can see the stage | When the tracker says nothing useful |
| Branch visit | Reference number + ID | Varies | Complex or long-stuck files |
Go to the issuer directly — never through a link
Type the bank's address yourself or open its app. Fraudulent "track your application" pages exist precisely because people applying for cards are anxious and searching.
And the rule that catches almost every scam: no legitimate issuer asks for money to release, expedite or approve an application. A joining fee, where one applies, is billed to the card after it's issued.
What Each Status Actually Means
The labels are vaguer than they need to be. This is what sits behind the common ones.
| Status | What's Happening | Typical Wait | What You Should Do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Submitted / received | In the queue, nothing started | 1–2 days | Nothing |
| Under process | Vague — covers verification and decision both | 2–7 days | Call and ask which specific stage |
| Documents pending | Something couldn't be read or didn't match | Stalled until you act | Ask which document, resupply same day |
| Verification in progress | Income, employment or address being checked | 1–5 days | Make sure you and your employer are reachable |
| Under credit review | A human is assessing the file | 2–5 days | Wait — chasing genuinely doesn't help |
| Approved | Decision made, card not yet produced | 1–3 days to dispatch | Ask for the tracking number |
| Dispatched / in transit | With the courier | 2–7 days | Ensure someone can receive it |
| Delivered | Handed over | — | Activate it, even if you won't use it yet |
| On hold | Something needs resolving before it proceeds | Indefinite | Call — this never resolves itself |
| Declined / rejected | Decision made against you | — | Find out why before applying anywhere else |
| No record found | Wrong reference, or never submitted | — | Check the acknowledgement; reapply if there is none |
The Question That Gets a Real Answer
"Where is my card?" produces a reassurance. This produces information:
"Which stage is pending — document verification, employment verification, address verification, credit decision, dispatch, or delivery?"
Those are the stages on the agent's screen. Naming them moves the conversation from sympathy to specifics, and it usually surfaces the actual blocker in one call.
Two follow-ups worth having ready:
- If it's documents — "Which document, and what exactly is wrong with it?"
- If it's dispatched — "What is the courier and the tracking number?"
If Nothing Moves
| Days Since Applying | Is It Normal? | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Yes | Nothing. Checking daily achieves nothing. |
| 3–7 | Yes | Check the tracker once |
| 7–14 | Slow but common | One call, asking which stage is pending |
| 14–21 | Something is stuck | Written complaint to the grievance officer |
| Over 30 | No | RBI Ombudsman, free of charge |
Every regulated issuer must publish a grievance redressal officer, and the escalation order matters — complaints that skip the first step are routinely rejected on process. The full sequence is on how to complain about a lender.
Useful things to do while you wait
- Keep your phone reachable — verification calls come from unknown numbers
- Tell your HR to expect an employment verification call
- Make sure someone can receive a courier in the daytime
- Keep the reference number somewhere you can find it
- Respond to any document request the same day
Things that make it worse
- Applying to another issuer because this one is slow
- Calling every day — it does not move a queue
- Ignoring an unknown-number call, then missing verification
- Paying anyone who offers to expedite it
- Submitting extra documents nobody asked for
The missed call that costs a week
Employment and address verification happen by phone, from numbers you don't recognise, usually in office hours. An unanswered call doesn't fail an application immediately — it queues it for a retry, and the retry may be days later.
For the week after applying, answer unknown numbers. It's the cheapest thing you can do to keep a file moving, and almost nobody is told to do it.
Questions this page gets asked
How do I check my credit card application status?
Through the issuer's own tracking page or app, by SMS, or by calling customer service — using your application reference number, or your registered mobile and date of birth.
I lost my reference number. What now?
Check the SMS and email you received on the day you applied. Most trackers also accept registered mobile plus date of birth, and customer service can locate the file from your PAN.
What does "under process" mean?
It's a catch-all covering verification and credit review. Call and ask which specific stage is pending — the label alone tells you very little.
How soon should I check?
After three days. Before that, nothing has happened that a tracker would show.
My status hasn't changed in ten days. Is that bad?
It usually means verification is stuck rather than that you're being declined. One call naming the stages normally surfaces it.
Can I check without a reference number?
Usually yes, with your registered mobile number and date of birth, or PAN at some issuers.
Does checking status affect my credit score?
No. Checking the progress of your own application has no effect. Only the issuer's original credit check was an enquiry.
What if the status says "no record found"?
Either the reference number is wrong or the application never submitted. Check your acknowledgement — if there isn't one, you'll need to apply again.
What does "on hold" mean?
Something needs resolving before it can proceed — usually a document or a verification. It doesn't resolve on its own, so call.
I was approved but the card hasn't arrived.
Ask for the courier name and tracking number. If delivery has failed repeatedly, request a re-dispatch, which typically adds a week.
Can I change my address after applying?
Usually yes before dispatch, by contacting the issuer with the reference number. After dispatch it becomes a delivery problem.
Will they call my employer?
Employment verification is common and may involve a call to your office or HR. It's routine and not a sign of a problem.
Can I cancel an application in progress?
Generally yes, by contacting the issuer. The hard enquiry remains on your report either way.
How long before I should complain?
Fourteen days with no decision is a reasonable point to put it in writing to the grievance officer. Thirty days unresolved opens the RBI Ombudsman route.
Does applying again speed things up?
No. It creates a second hard enquiry and a second file, and the new issuer sees the first application pending.
Why do different channels show different statuses?
Systems update at different intervals. The phone agent generally sees the most current position.
What if I'm told to submit documents I already sent?
Usually the upload failed or was unreadable. Ask what was wrong with the original rather than resending the same file.
Is there a fee to track an application?
No. Anyone charging to check, expedite or release your application is not the issuer.
Can I collect the card from a branch instead?
Some issuers allow it, particularly for existing customers. Ask before dispatch, not after.
The card was returned undelivered. What happens?
It goes back to the issuer. Confirm your address, ask for re-dispatch, and give an address where someone is present during the day.
The Bottom Line
Keep the reference number, wait three days before your first check, and use the issuer's own site or app rather than any link. When the status is vague — and "under process" always is — call and name the stages: document verification, employment verification, address verification, credit decision, dispatch, delivery. That single question converts a reassurance into an answer.
Answer unknown numbers for the week after applying, tell your HR to expect a call, and don't apply anywhere else while this one is pending. If fourteen days pass with no decision, put it in writing to the grievance officer.
