A Loan App Is Harassing You. Here Is What To Do.

Reading your contacts and messaging them is outside the rules regardless of what you agreed to in the app. What to do depends on whether a regulated lender sits behind it.

One question decides everything Is a bank or NBFC named in the app? YES NO Regulated route 1. Written complaint to that lender 2. Wait 30 days 3. RBI Ombudsman Criminal route 1. cybercrime.gov.in 2. Local police 3. Report on the app store Either way, keep every screenshot before you uninstall. Deleting the app deletes your evidence.

If you read nothing else

  • Screenshot everything before you uninstall. Removing the app removes your evidence.
  • Revoke contacts and storage permissions now — Android settings, not inside the app.
  • Tell your contacts before the app does. One honest message removes the entire weapon.
  • Do not borrow from a second app to repay the first. This is how the trap is built.
  • Harassment is a separate wrong from the debt. You can owe money and still be the victim of a crime.

Do These Five Things Today

  1. Screenshot everything. The app listing, the loan terms, every message and call log, anything sent to your contacts. Do this before anything else.
  2. Revoke permissions in your phone's settings. Contacts, storage, photos, SMS, call logs. Settings → Apps → the app → Permissions. Do not rely on toggles inside the app itself.
  3. Message your contacts first. One line: "You may get a message about a loan of mine from an app. It is a recovery tactic, please ignore it." This is unpleasant and it takes the weapon away completely.
  4. Find out who the lender is. Check the app listing, the loan agreement and the sanction letter for a bank or NBFC name. This decides everything that follows.
  5. Do not take another app loan to clear this one. Every case that becomes unmanageable goes through that step.

Telling people first is the whole defence

The entire model depends on shame. The threat is not really that they will contact your sister or your manager — it is that they will do it before you can explain. Sending a short, unembarrassed message to the people who matter takes about ten minutes and turns the threat into an inconvenience. Almost everyone finds this the hardest step and almost everyone reports it was the one that worked.

What the Rules Actually Say

The RBI's digital lending framework sets out several things that matter here.

The ruleWhat it means for you
Lending must sit with a regulated entityAn app is an interface. The loan itself must be from a bank or NBFC.
Data collection must be need-based and consentedBlanket access to your phone is not need-based for a loan.
No access to contacts, media or call logsReading your phonebook is outside the framework whatever you tapped.
Disbursal and repayment direct to the borrower's accountMoney should not route through a third party's account.
A key fact statement, before you borrowThe full cost, including all charges, disclosed upfront.
A named grievance officerThere must be somebody to complain to, and they must be identified.

An app that reads your contacts and then messages them has broken the framework twice over — once by taking the data, once by using it. That is true regardless of whether you owe the money.

Which Kind of App Are You Dealing With

Work through these. It takes ten minutes and it determines where a complaint can actually go.

CheckRegulatedProbably not
A bank or NBFC is named in the app and the agreementYes, clearlyNo name anywhere, or only a brand
You received a sanction letter and key fact statementYesNothing in writing at all
The money arrived in your own bank accountYesRouted through a wallet or third party
Charges match what was disclosedYesA large "processing fee" deducted with no notice
TenureMonths, with a schedule7 to 14 days, rolled over repeatedly
A named grievance officer and addressPresentAbsent, or an unmonitored email

You can cross-check the NBFC name against the RBI's own register of regulated entities. If the app names nobody, that is itself the answer.

Where to Report, Depending on the Answer

If a regulated bank or NBFC is behind it

  1. Write to that lender's grievance officer with your screenshots and a dated log.
  2. Keep the acknowledgement. Wait 30 days.
  3. If there is no reply or it does not satisfy you, escalate free of charge to the RBI Ombudsman.

The step-by-step of that route, including what to include, is on the complaints page.

If no regulated lender is named

  1. cybercrime.gov.in — the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Complaints can be filed online, with attachments.
  2. Helpline 1930, particularly where money has been taken.
  3. Your local police station. Harassment, criminal intimidation and misuse of personal data are matters for them, not for a banking regulator.
  4. Report the app on the store it was downloaded from, with the same evidence.

Owing money and being harassed are separate questions

People hesitate to go to the police because they did take the loan and have not repaid it. Those are different things. A debt is a civil matter between you and whoever lent it. Publishing your photographs, messaging your contacts, or threatening you are not debt collection — and none of it becomes acceptable because the underlying amount is genuinely owed. Report it as what it is.

What Not To Do

InstinctWhy it backfires
Uninstall immediatelyDeletes your evidence. Screenshot first, then remove.
Borrow from another app to repayThe single step that turns one app into six.
Pay whatever they demand to make it stopOften does not stop it, and rewards the tactic. Pay what the agreement says.
Argue over WhatsApp for hoursAchieves nothing and produces material they will use.
Change your number and hopeThey already have your contacts. It does not remove the pressure.
Ignore it entirelyIf a regulated lender is behind it, the debt is real and the record consequence is real.

Telling a Legitimate Lender From an App Before You Borrow

Worth knowing for next time, and worth sending to anyone about to tap install.

  • The app names the bank or NBFC that actually lends, on the listing and in the agreement.
  • It asks for KYC and income documents — and not for your contacts, photos or call logs.
  • You get a key fact statement showing the total cost before you accept.
  • Money is disbursed to your own account, and repayments go back to the lender directly.
  • The tenure is measured in months, with a repayment schedule, not in days with rollovers.
  • There is a named grievance officer with a real address.

Please note

This page summarises the RBI's digital lending expectations in general terms as they stood when written; the framework and the list of regulated entities change. Nothing here is legal advice. If you are being threatened, treat it as a police matter first and a lending matter second. Where money has been taken by deception, report it immediately — recovery becomes harder with delay. Money Bharti is a loan marketplace working with RBI-registered banks and NBFCs, is not a lender, and does not operate a lending app.

Questions This Page Gets Asked

The app is messaging my contacts. Is that legal?

No. Accessing your phonebook is outside the RBI's digital lending framework, and using it to pressure you is a separate wrong again. It does not become lawful because a permission screen was accepted during onboarding.

Do I still have to repay an illegal loan app?

Money actually received is generally repayable, but the terms may be challengeable and the harassment is a matter for the police regardless. Do not let threats push you into paying amounts far above what you borrowed. Take advice if the sums are large.

How do I know if a loan app is RBI registered?

A legitimate app names the bank or NBFC that lends, in the app listing and the loan agreement, and that name can be checked against the RBI's register of regulated entities. No name anywhere is the clearest signal there is.

Should I uninstall the app?

Yes, but only after screenshotting everything and revoking its permissions from your phone's settings. Uninstalling first destroys the evidence you will need.

Can they really publish my photos?

Some have. It is a criminal matter, not a recovery method, and it is exactly what the cyber crime portal and the police exist for. Report it rather than negotiating over it.

Will complaining make things worse?

A documented complaint generally changes behaviour rather than worsening it, because it converts an untraceable nuisance into a recorded matter. Where a regulated lender sits behind the app, it also brings a regulator into the picture.

They are threatening to file a police case against me. Can they?

Anyone can allege anything, but simply not repaying a loan is a civil matter, not a criminal one. Ask for the FIR number. Threats of criminal action for ordinary non-payment are pressure, not procedure.

What if I took loans from several apps?

List them, work out what is genuinely owed against what is being demanded, and deal with the regulated ones through the lender route first. If your income is intact and the debts are real, consolidating them into one loan is worth examining — see the consolidation guide.

Conclusion

The tactic depends on two things: that you will be too ashamed to tell anyone, and that you will not know the rules. Both are removable in an evening. Screenshot everything before you touch the app. Revoke its permissions from the phone rather than from inside it. Send one plain message to the people who might be contacted, before anyone else does. Then find out whether a regulated lender sits behind the app, because that single fact decides whether your complaint goes to a bank and the RBI, or to the police and the cyber crime portal.

And hold on to the distinction that the whole thing is designed to blur: you may genuinely owe the money, and what is being done to you may still be a crime. Those two facts sit together comfortably. Owing a debt has never entitled anybody to publish your photographs or message your family.

If several app loans have stacked up and your income is otherwise intact, the way out is usually one ordinary loan at an ordinary rate replacing all of them — the debt consolidation guide covers when that works.

If app loans have piled up

Replacing several short-tenure app loans with one regulated loan at a normal rate is often the only clean exit. Checking what you would be offered is a soft enquiry.
