What a co-borrower actually does
Adding a co-borrower does not simply attach a supportive name to your file. Their income joins the pool the lender assesses — and so do their existing EMIs. The calculation is combined on both sides.
Take a straightforward case. You earn ₹40,000 with ₹8,000 of existing EMIs, so at a 50% cap you have ₹12,000 of headroom, supporting roughly ₹5.4 lakh over five years. Add a spouse earning ₹35,000 with no obligations and the combined position is ₹75,000 of income against ₹8,000 of EMIs — ₹29,500 of headroom, or about ₹13 lakh. The loan more than doubles.
Now change one detail. If that spouse has a ₹15,000 car loan EMI, the combined headroom falls to ₹14,500 and the gain shrinks to a fraction of what it looked like. This is why a co-borrower is worth checking rather than assuming — run both versions on our eligibility calculator before deciding.
Who can be a co-borrower
| Relationship | Typically accepted |
|---|---|
| Spouse | Yes — the most common choice |
| Parents | Yes, subject to age at loan maturity |
| Earning children | Yes |
| Siblings, friends, colleagues | Generally not for a personal loan |
Where a parent is the co-borrower, their age at maturity usually binds the tenure — the same rule that shortens loans for older applicants elsewhere. A retired parent on a pension can still help, though their contribution is assessed on pension income; the position is set out on our pensioners page.
Did you know?
A co-borrower is jointly and severally liable — not a character reference, and not a fallback. If repayment stops, the lender can pursue either party for the whole balance, and a default is reported on both credit files, not only the main applicant's. Family members frequently sign these without being told that plainly. Anyone considering it should understand they are borrowing the money too, in every sense that matters.
Eligibility
- Age — 21 to 60.
- Income — at least ₹25,000 a month, salaried.
- Employment — full-time with a reputable organisation, at least one year in the current company.
- Credit score — 700 and above.
- Documents — three months of payslips and bank statements, plus KYC.
The 700 score bar is worth noting: it is lower than IndusInd's 730 and well below Kotak's 760, which makes YES Bank one of the more reachable private banks for applicants in the low 700s. What each band is worth is on our 700 score page.
Expert insight
Before adding a co-borrower, check whether you actually need one. Clearing a small existing EMI often produces the same increase in eligibility without involving anyone else, without a second person's credit file being exposed, and without the awkwardness that follows if repayment ever becomes difficult. Use the co-borrower for the gap that remains after you have cleared what you can — not as the first move.

Questions this page gets asked
Can I add a co-borrower to a YES Bank personal loan?
Yes. Parents, spouse or earning children can generally be added.
How much does a co-borrower increase my loan?
It depends on their income and their existing EMIs, both of which are added. It can more than double the amount, or barely change it.
Is a co-borrower liable for the loan?
Yes, jointly and severally. Both parties can be pursued for the full balance, and a default is reported on both credit files.
What is the minimum salary?
About ₹25,000 a month for salaried applicants.
What CIBIL score is needed?
700 and above, which is more reachable than at several other private banks.
How much can I borrow?
Up to around ₹40 lakh, with the actual sanction set by combined income against combined EMIs.
Can a retired parent be a co-borrower?
Often yes, assessed on pension income, with their age at maturity limiting the tenure.
Which lenders do not allow a co-applicant?
Bank of Baroda generally considers applications individually — see our Bank of Baroda page.
Conclusion
YES Bank is worth shortlisting for two specific reasons: a score bar of 700 that is lower than most private banks, and a clear willingness to accept a co-borrower when your own income falls short.
Use that second feature deliberately, though. Clear what you can from your own obligations first, run both versions of the numbers, and make sure whoever signs alongside you understands they are borrowing the money as well. Other lenders are on our banks page.
