Where your business falls
Classification runs on two tests together — investment in plant, machinery or equipment, and annual turnover. A business must satisfy both limits to sit in a category; exceed either and it moves up.
| Category | Investment up to | Turnover up to |
|---|---|---|
| Micro | ₹1 crore | ₹5 crore |
| Small | ₹10 crore | ₹50 crore |
| Medium | ₹50 crore | ₹250 crore |
Classification is now derived automatically from your PAN-linked ITR and GST data, so it updates itself as the business grows rather than requiring a fresh declaration. Traders are included alongside manufacturers and service providers for the purposes of priority sector lending.
These limits have been revised more than once, so confirm the current thresholds on the official Udyam portal before relying on them for a borderline case.
What registration actually changes
Collateral-free credit through CGTMSE
The most valuable one. The guarantee covers a large share of the lender's loss, so a bank can extend collateral-free credit far beyond what it would otherwise consider — up to ₹5 crore. Without Udyam registration you cannot access it at all. There is an annual guarantee fee, usually passed on to you, so compare the all-in cost against an ordinary unsecured facility.
Priority sector treatment
Banks have targets for lending to the priority sector, and MSME lending counts toward them. That is not charity — it means your file is competing for capital the bank has an obligation to deploy, which tends to show up as better pricing and more willingness to look at borderline cases, particularly near the end of a reporting period.
A legal right against late-paying buyers
Under the MSMED Act, a buyer who does not pay a registered micro or small enterprise within 45 days becomes liable for compound interest at three times the RBI bank rate, and disputes can be pursued through the Samadhaan portal and the Facilitation Council.
Most suppliers never invoke it, for the entirely understandable reason that they want the next order. But it is worth knowing before you borrow expensively to bridge a delay that is legally the buyer's problem — and the existence of the right occasionally changes a conversation without ever being formally used.
Scheme access
PMEGP, Stand-Up India, state-level subsidies, technology upgradation support and interest subvention schemes generally require MSME status. Registration is the gate to all of them.
Udyam registration is free — do not pay an agent
The official portal issues the certificate at no cost, using only PAN and Aadhaar, in a few minutes. Numerous look-alike sites charge fees for what the government provides free, and some collect data they have no business holding. Register directly on the official Udyam portal, and if a consultant offers to "get you MSME registration" for a fee, understand that you are paying for form-filling and nothing else.
What it does not change
Registration does not make you creditworthy. Vintage, declared income, banking conduct and both credit reports are read exactly as they would be otherwise, and an MSME file with weak numbers is refused like any other. What the status changes is collateral, pricing and legal position — not the underlying credit assessment. The eligibility page covers what is actually being assessed.
Questions this page gets asked
Is an MSME loan a separate type of loan?
No. MSME is a classification of your business, not a product. You still take a term loan, an overdraft, working capital finance or equipment finance — the classification changes how those are priced, secured and supported.
Is Udyam registration mandatory for a business loan?
Not for ordinary commercial lending. It is required for CGTMSE cover, government schemes and priority sector treatment, so for most small businesses it is effectively essential. It is free, so there is no reason to skip it.
Can traders register under Udyam?
Yes. Retail and wholesale trade are included for the purposes of priority sector lending, having previously been excluded. Manufacturers and service providers have always been covered.
What happens if my business outgrows the MSME limits?
Classification updates automatically from your ITR and GST data, and the business moves up a category or out of MSME status altogether. Existing facilities are not disturbed, but scheme benefits tied to the earlier category taper off.
Does the 45-day payment rule really work?
The legal right exists and the Samadhaan portal is functional. In practice most suppliers hesitate to use it against buyers they depend on, which is a commercial judgement rather than a legal weakness. It is most useful with a buyer relationship that has already broken down, or as a known backdrop to a negotiation.
