Muthoot Finance Personal Loan

Muthoot offers both an unsecured personal loan and a loan against gold. If you own gold, the secured one is usually cheaper by a wide margin — and needs no credit history at all.

The pricing gap is the whole point. A secured loan is cheaper because the lender's risk is covered by something it holds, and a gold loan is about as well covered as lending gets — the collateral is liquid, easily valued and physically in the lender's vault. That is why the same company can price a gold loan several percentage points below its own unsecured product.

Who each one is for

The gold loan makes sense if you own jewellery you are not using, you need money for a short period, and you are confident of repaying — a business receivable due in four months, a medical bill before an insurance settlement, school fees before a bonus.

The personal loan makes sense if you own no gold, or you need a longer repayment period than a gold loan comfortably offers, or the amount you need exceeds what your jewellery supports. It is also the better product where losing the gold would be unacceptable at any price — which for many families it is.

Did you know?

A gold loan needs no credit history whatsoever, because the lender is not relying on your record — it is holding the security. For someone new to credit, or rebuilding after a default, that makes it one of very few routes to affordable borrowing. It is worth knowing alongside the options on our no credit history page, where the alternatives are all considerably more expensive.

The risk nobody prices in

The rate comparison is easy and it favours gold. The part that deserves more thought is what happens if repayment goes wrong.

Default on an unsecured personal loan and you face recovery action and serious credit damage — bad, and recoverable over a few years. Default on a gold loan and the jewellery is auctioned. In Indian households that gold is frequently inherited, or from a wedding, and its value to the family is not the number the lender wrote down.

Two practical safeguards. Gold loan tenures are short, so be realistic about whether the money to repay genuinely arrives in that window rather than hoping it will. And if gold prices fall during the term, lenders can ask for a top-up — a possibility worth confirming before you pledge, not after.

Expert insight

The most common mistake here is renewing. A gold loan taken for four months, then rolled over repeatedly for two years, quietly becomes an expensive long-term loan with your jewellery held throughout — and the borrower usually never made a decision to do that. If you cannot see the specific source of the repayment before you pledge, take a personal loan with a defined EMI instead. A structure that forces you to repay on schedule is worth more than a rate that lets you postpone.

Applying

A gold loan is transacted at a branch — the jewellery is valued in front of you, and disbursal is usually the same visit. Ask for the purity assessment and the valuation in writing, keep the pledge receipt safe, and confirm how the gold is stored and insured.

The unsecured personal loan follows the ordinary route: KYC, income proof and bank statements, with the rate set by your credit profile as set out on our CIBIL score page.

Questions this page gets asked

Is a gold loan cheaper than a personal loan?

Generally yes, and by a wide margin, because it is secured on jewellery the lender holds. The trade is that the asset is at risk.

Do I need a credit score for a gold loan?

No. The loan is secured on the gold, so your bureau record is not the basis of the decision.

How is the loan amount decided?

By the weight and purity of the gold pledged, within the loan-to-value limits the RBI permits.

What purity is accepted?

Commonly jewellery between 22 and 24 carats.

What happens if I cannot repay?

The lender can auction the pledged gold after due notice. This is the central risk and the reason to be certain about repayment before pledging.

Can I be asked for more gold during the loan?

If gold prices fall significantly, lenders may seek a top-up to maintain the loan-to-value ratio. Confirm this before pledging.

Is Muthoot's personal loan a good option?

It is a normal unsecured NBFC loan, assessed on income and credit profile. If you own gold, compare it against the secured product first.

Should I keep renewing a gold loan?

Try not to. Repeated renewal turns a short-term loan into an expensive long-term one with your jewellery held throughout.

Conclusion

If you own gold and need money for a short, defined period, the secured route at Muthoot will almost certainly cost you less than the unsecured one — and it works even with no credit history.

The condition is that you must be genuinely sure of repaying inside the term, because the consequence of getting it wrong is not a damaged score but the loss of the jewellery. Where that certainty is missing, a personal loan with a fixed EMI is the safer product even at the higher rate. Other options are on our NBFC page.
