On interest rates
Rates change frequently and are set per applicant, so we do not republish a figure here. Check HDFC Bank’s current rate on their own site, then work out the real cost with our EMI calculator.
Two customers, two entirely different products
| Existing HDFC customer with an offer | Everyone else | |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | None required | KYC, income proof, statements |
| Decision | Already made | Ordinary underwriting |
| Disbursal | Effectively immediate | Days |
| Amount | Set by your relationship and score | Set by income and employer grade |
| Where to look | Your netbanking or app, under offers | A normal application |
The reason for the gap is not favouritism, it is information. HDFC can already see an existing customer's salary credits, balances and repayment behaviour on its own systems. There is nothing left to verify, so nothing is asked for. An outside applicant has to supply all of that on paper, and be assessed on it.
Check your offer before doing anything else
If you bank with HDFC, open the app and look for a pre-approved personal loan offer before you fill in a single form anywhere. Three reasons it matters:
It costs nothing to look. A pre-approved offer involves no hard enquiry, so checking it leaves no mark on your credit report.
It is often priced below the public rate card. The bank is competing for a customer it already knows is good.
It gives you a floor. Even if you end up borrowing elsewhere, you now know the number every other offer has to beat.
Did you know?
Instant disbursal and no documents make it unusually easy to borrow more than you meant to. A pre-approved limit is not a recommendation — it is the maximum the bank is willing to risk, calculated from your profile, not from your need. The EMI is just as real as on a loan that took three weeks and a folder of paperwork. Decide the amount before you open the app, not while you are looking at the slider.
If you bank somewhere else
You can still borrow from HDFC, through an ordinary application assessed on income, employer grade and score. But be clear about what you are doing: you are applying as an outsider to a bank that reserves its best treatment for insiders, while your own bank has the information advantage HDFC is rewarding its customers for.
So check your own bank's pre-approved offer first. If HDFC still beats it, apply here. If not, you have saved yourself a hard enquiry. The general criteria banks apply are on our eligibility page, and the reason employer grading matters so much is explained on the engineers page, where the effect is clearest.
Expert insight
A pre-approved offer is genuinely pre-approved on the amount and the rate, but it is not always the cheapest money available to you. Borrowers regularly accept a 13% instant offer while holding a fixed deposit, or gold, or an existing home loan eligible for a top-up — each of which typically prices several points lower. Ten seconds of convenience is worth something; it is rarely worth three percentage points over five years. Check the secured route before you tap accept.
How much you will get
A pre-approved figure is calculated from your relationship and credit profile, and a higher amount is often available if you are willing to submit documents after all. Either way the FOIR test still applies — total EMIs are capped as a share of net income, with existing obligations deducted first. Our eligibility calculator shows what that leaves in your case.

Questions this page gets asked
What is HDFC's Xpress personal loan?
A pre-approved loan for existing customers that can be disbursed almost immediately, without documents, because the bank has already assessed you from its own records.
Can I get it if I do not bank with HDFC?
Not the instant version. You can apply through the ordinary route, which involves normal documents and underwriting.
How much is pre-approved?
It depends on your relationship and credit profile, and can run to ₹25 lakh. Higher amounts are often possible with documents.
Does checking my pre-approved offer affect my credit score?
No. There is no hard enquiry involved in viewing an offer the bank has already made.
What CIBIL score does HDFC expect?
Generally around 720 and above for a personal loan, with better pricing above 750.
What tenure is available?
Commonly 12 to 60 months. A longer term lowers the EMI and raises the total substantially — check both on our EMI calculator.
Should I take the pre-approved offer straight away?
Only after checking whether a secured option — a top-up, a loan against deposit or gold — prices lower. Convenience is worth less than several points of interest.
Can self-employed applicants apply?
Yes, through the ordinary route, assessed on ITR and banking history. See our self-employed page.
Conclusion
Which HDFC you are dealing with depends entirely on whether you already bank there. If you do, your offer is sitting in the app, it costs nothing to look at, and it is probably the best starting number you will find — check it before you go anywhere else.
If you do not bank with HDFC, apply to your own bank first for exactly the same reason. And whichever offer you take, spend two minutes checking whether something secured beats it. Other lenders are covered under personal loan from banks.
