The Full List, by Category
Identity
Under the RBI's KYC framework, issuers accept an officially valid document. Any one of the following, plus PAN:
| Document | Serves as Identity | Serves as Address | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAN card | Yes | No | Effectively compulsory — it retrieves your credit report |
| Aadhaar | Yes | Yes | Address is whatever you last updated |
| Passport | Yes | Yes | Must be current |
| Driving licence | Yes | Yes | Must be current |
| Voter ID | Yes | Yes | Address often outdated |
| NREGA job card | Yes | Yes | Accepted as an OVD |
PAN sits apart from the rest. It's how the issuer pulls your bureau file, so an application without it doesn't proceed at any mainstream issuer.
Address
Most OVDs carry an address and serve for both. Where they don't show your current address, issuers generally accept a deemed document instead:
- A recent utility bill — electricity, water, piped gas, landline. Recent usually means within about two months; a six-month-old bill is not a recent bill.
- A registered rent agreement. An unregistered one on plain paper is treated as much weaker evidence.
- Property tax receipt, or a state or central government issued document showing the address.
Income
Salaried
- Last 3 months' payslips
- 3–6 months' salary account statement
- Form 16 or latest ITR, where asked
- Appointment letter if the job is recent
Self-employed
- ITR for 1–2 years with computation
- 6–12 months' business account statements
- GST returns where registered
- Business registration, deed or incorporation proof
- Audited financials for larger applications
Pensioner
- Pension payment order or pension slips
- Account statement showing the credit
- A pension is income like any other
Secured card
- Identity and address only
- The fixed deposit itself
- Income proof usually not required
- The route when income can't be evidenced
Use account aggregator consent if it's offered
Instead of uploading statements, you can consent to your bank sharing them directly through the account aggregator framework. The data is verified, no PDFs change hands, and no banking credentials are shared.
It removes an entire category of problem — locked files, wrong period, wrong account, illegible scans — in a single step, and issuers trust it more because it didn't pass through your hands.
The Three Mismatches That Stall Applications
Read this part even if you skip the rest. These cause more delay than missing documents ever do.
1. Your name, spelled differently in three places
PAN says one thing, Aadhaar another, the bank account a third. An initial expanded in one, a middle name present in another, a maiden name never updated. Every version is genuinely yours — automated matching doesn't know that, and the file drops into a manual queue.
Check now: put PAN, Aadhaar and your bank passbook side by side and read them character by character. Corrections take days to weeks, so this is not a same-day fix. If you can't correct it in time, declare the mismatch in the application rather than letting the system discover it — a declared mismatch is handled, a discovered one queues.
2. An address on the form that no document supports
You live where you live. Your Aadhaar shows where you lived when you last updated it. If the application carries the current address and nothing evidences it, verification has to happen another way — and that's a manual step.
Recent movers get caught by this constantly. Either update the OVD, or supply a recent utility bill or registered rent agreement for the current address, and declare the permanent address separately where the form has a field for it.
3. Bank statements the system can't read or can't use
| Problem | Why It Fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Password-protected PDF | The automated reader can't open it | Download unlocked, or supply the password where asked |
| Photograph or scan of a printout | A picture of a statement isn't a statement | Download the original PDF from your bank |
| Wrong period | Six months asked, five supplied | Full period, ending with the latest completed month |
| Wrong account | Salary credit not visible | Use the account the salary actually lands in |
| Statement too old | Ends weeks before the application | Regenerate on the day you apply |
Documents by Situation
| Situation | What's Different | What to Add |
|---|---|---|
| Recently changed jobs | New salary account has little history | Appointment letter, plus the old account's statements |
| Recently moved home | Address on no document | Recent utility bill or registered rent agreement |
| Cash salary | Income can't be verified automatically | Realistically, a secured card instead |
| NRI applicant | Different KYC and account rules apply | Confirm the issuer's NRI process directly |
| First-time applicant | No bureau file to read | Deposit for a secured card; entry variants otherwise |
| Add-on card | Primary holder already qualified | Add-on holder's KYC only |
| Business owner | Income inferred, not read | ITR, GST, banking — and they must agree |
The Twenty-Minute Pre-Flight Check
- PAN, Aadhaar and bank account — same name, character for character
- PAN and Aadhaar linked
- Current address supported by at least one document, and any bill recent
- Bank statements downloaded as original PDFs, unlocked, right account, full period
- Payslips or ITR to hand, with any gap you can already explain
- Existing EMIs written down accurately — the credit report shows what you omit
- Phone charged, camera working, quiet room for video KYC
What makes verification fast
- Account aggregator consent instead of uploads
- One name spelling everywhere
- An address that appears on a document you hold
- Statements for the account the salary arrives in
- Declaring anything unusual before being asked
What sends a file to a human
- An expanded initial on one document and not another
- A utility bill from last year
- Password-protected or photographed statements
- Income arriving as irregular transfers from individuals
- Existing EMIs understated on the form
What "documents required" pages usually miss
Nearly every page on this topic lists the same six documents and stops. But applications don't fail for want of a payslip — people applying for credit cards generally have payslips.
They fail because the payslip says Rajesh Kumar Singh, the PAN says Rajesh K Singh, and the bank account says R K Singh. All three are the same person. None of them match automatically.
Questions this page gets asked
Can I get a credit card without a PAN card?
Realistically no. PAN is how the issuer retrieves your credit report, and no mainstream issuer proceeds without it.
Is Aadhaar compulsory?
Not specifically — any officially valid document works for KYC. Aadhaar is the most common because it covers identity and address together.
Do I need to visit a branch?
Usually not. Video KYC has been permitted since 2020 and completes identity verification on a live call in working hours.
Is a salary slip compulsory?
For a salaried applicant it's the normal proof, but bank statements showing the salary credit often substitute. Self-employed applicants use ITR and statements instead, and a secured card needs neither.
How old can my documents be?
Identity documents need only be valid. Utility bills used as address proof are usually wanted within about two months. Statements are normally wanted to the latest completed month.
Is account aggregator consent safe?
Generally safer than emailing statements. Consent is specific about what's shared and for how long, it's revocable, and no banking credentials change hands. Read what you're consenting to before approving.
What if my name differs across documents?
Declare it in the application and supply whatever supports the link — a marriage certificate, a gazette notification, or a bank letter. Correcting PAN or Aadhaar is better but takes days to weeks.
Can I use my parents' address?
Only if you can genuinely be reached there and a document supports it. Using an address where verification will fail is worse than declaring a rented one honestly.
What if I don't have a utility bill in my name?
A registered rent agreement is the usual alternative. Some issuers accept a bill in the landlord's or a parent's name alongside the agreement — ask before assuming.
Do I need Form 16?
Not always. Payslips and salary account statements are usually enough. Form 16 or an ITR is asked for more often at higher tiers or where income needs corroborating.
How many months of bank statements?
Commonly three to six for salaried applicants and six to twelve for self-employed. Supply the full period asked for — a short statement is treated as missing.
Can I submit documents after applying?
Usually yes, through the issuer's portal or by email against your reference number. It does add time, which is why having them ready matters.
What documents does a secured card need?
Identity, address and the fixed deposit. Income proof is generally not required, which is exactly why it's the route when income can't be evidenced.
Are photocopies accepted?
For online applications you upload scans or photos of the originals, and video KYC verifies you against them. For branch applications, self-attested copies with originals for sighting.
Will the issuer verify my documents with my employer?
Employment verification is common and may involve a call to your office or HR. It's routine.
What if my ITR and GST returns don't match?
They rarely match exactly — different bases and periods. A large unexplained gap is what causes a stall. Be ready to explain it rather than hoping it isn't noticed.
Do I need business proof if I'm self-employed?
Usually yes — registration, licence, partnership deed or incorporation documents, depending on the entity.
Can someone else submit documents for me?
No. KYC requires your participation, and video KYC verifies you personally. Be wary of anyone offering to handle it for a fee.
What happens if a document is rejected?
The issuer normally asks for a replacement rather than declining outright. Ask specifically which document failed and why — it's usually fixable within days.
Do I need the same documents for every issuer?
Broadly yes. The categories are set by KYC rules; what varies is the income proof depth and how much each issuer asks for at each tier.
The Bottom Line
Three categories, a short list, and almost none of the trouble comes from the list itself. PAN plus one officially valid document covers identity and usually address; payslips and statements, or ITR and banking, cover income; a secured card needs neither.
What costs people weeks is the mismatch. Put PAN, Aadhaar and your bank passbook side by side before you apply and read the name on each, character by character. Check the address on the form appears on something you hold. Download statements as unlocked originals for the right account, or use account aggregator consent and skip the problem entirely.
