One checklist for salaried, one for self-employed, and the single mistake that delays most applications.
The paperwork for a personal loan is short. Four categories, six or seven files, and for most salaried applicants it is done in twenty minutes. Yet incomplete documents remain the single most common reason an application stalls — not rejection, just delay, sometimes for a week, over a page that was cropped.
This page lists exactly what is needed for salaried and self-employed applicants, what each document is actually being used to verify, and the specific mistakes that send a file back.
| Category | What to send | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | PAN card (mandatory) | Links you to your credit report and tax record |
| Identity / address | Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence | KYC under RBI rules |
| Address | Utility bill, rent agreement or passport | Current residence, if it differs from Aadhaar |
| Income | Last 3 months' salary slips | Net take-home, not CTC |
| Income | Form 16 or last 2 years' ITR | Confirms the slips, catches inconsistencies |
| Banking | Last 6 months' salary account statement | That the salary actually credits, and how you handle money |
| Employment | Employee ID or offer letter | Tenure and employer category |
| Photo | Recent passport-size photograph | Standard KYC |
| Category | What to send | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | PAN card (mandatory) | As above |
| Identity / address | Aadhaar, passport, voter ID or driving licence | KYC |
| Income | Last 2 – 3 years' ITR with computation of income | Declared profit — the figure eligibility is built on |
| Income | Audited P&L and balance sheet, if applicable | Scale and health of the business |
| Banking | Last 12 months' current account statement | Real cash flow, bounces, overdraft use |
| Business | GST registration, Shop & Establishment licence, or partnership deed | The business exists and is registered |
| Business | Proof of continuity — typically 3 years | Vintage |
| Office | Address proof for the business premises | Verification visit, where applicable |
Self-employed files carry more weight on banking than salaried ones. Twelve months of clean, regular credits tell a lender more than the ITR alone. A profitable business with erratic banking is a harder case than a modest one with steady flows.
Cropped or partial bank statements. This is the biggest one by a distance. A screenshot of the last page, or a statement with the header cut off, gets returned. Lenders need the full PDF: your name, account number, the bank's branding, and every page in the period — including the blank ones.
Statements downloaded as images. Send the bank's official PDF, not a photograph of a screen. Many lenders now verify statements electronically, and an image cannot be verified. Net banking exports the correct file in two clicks.
Salary slips without the employer's stamp or digital signature. An unsigned printout from an HR portal is often refused. Most portals offer a signed PDF version — use that one.
Address mismatch left unexplained. If your Aadhaar shows a hometown address and you live in Bengaluru, send a current address proof as well. Left unaddressed, this triggers a verification query and adds days.
Name spelt differently across documents. "Rajesh Kumar" on PAN and "Rajesh Kumar Singh" on Aadhaar will stop a file. If your documents disagree, fix the mismatch before applying rather than during.
The practical version
Before you start, put every file in one folder: full-page PDFs, named clearly, nothing cropped, nothing photographed. Applications submitted with a complete, legible set are commonly approved within 24 hours. Applications that need a second round of documents take a week.
The statement is doing more work than any other document in the file. From it a lender reads: whether the salary genuinely credits and on what date, whether there are cheque bounces, whether the balance runs to zero before each payday, what other EMIs are debiting, and whether there are unexplained large credits.
That last one matters more than people expect. A one-off ₹3 lakh credit with no explanation invites a question. If it was a genuine transfer — a property sale, a family gift, a matured deposit — say so upfront rather than waiting to be asked.
Most lenders now complete KYC without a branch visit. Aadhaar-based e-KYC verifies identity in minutes with an OTP. Video KYC involves a short call where an officer sees your face and your original PAN card, and it typically takes under five minutes.
Two practical notes. Keep the physical PAN card to hand for the video call — a photocopy or a photo on your phone is not accepted. And the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar must be active, because the OTP goes there and nowhere else.
Never pay before disbursal
Money Bharti never asks a customer to transfer money before a loan is approved, and neither does any RBI-registered lender. If someone demands an advance "processing" or "file" charge, stop and report it to support@moneybharti.com.
Q1. What documents are required for a personal loan?
PAN and Aadhaar for KYC, three months of salary slips, six months of salary account statements, Form 16 or the last two ITRs, an address proof and a photograph. Self-employed applicants send two to three years of ITRs, twelve months of current account statements and business registration proof instead of slips.
Q2. Can I get a personal loan without salary slips?
Sometimes. Some lenders accept bank statements showing regular salary credits together with Form 16. Self-employed applicants are assessed on ITRs and business banking rather than slips at all.
Q3. Why do lenders ask for six months of bank statements?
The statement shows whether the salary actually credits and when, whether there are bounced cheques, what other EMIs are debiting, and whether the balance runs to zero before payday. It verifies the salary slip rather than duplicating it.
Q4. Is a PAN card mandatory?
Yes. PAN is how the lender pulls your credit report and matches your tax record. No RBI-registered lender will process a personal loan without it.
Q5. My Aadhaar address is different from where I live. Is that a problem?
Not if you send a current address proof alongside — a utility bill, rent agreement or passport. Left unexplained it triggers a verification query and delays the file by several days.
Q6. How long does verification take once documents are submitted?
With a complete and legible set, most lenders approve within 24 hours and disburse in 24 to 72 hours. Incomplete or cropped documents are the usual reason a file takes a week instead.
Q7. Do I need to submit original documents?
Rarely. Scans or clear PDFs are accepted for almost everything, and KYC is usually completed through Aadhaar e-KYC or a short video call. Keep the physical PAN card available for that call.
