AU is not a universal bank like HDFC or ICICI. It holds a small finance bank licence, which is a different category created by the RBI to serve small businesses, self-employed people and areas the big banks reach thinly.

That history shows in the card business. AU came to credit cards recently and competes for customers the larger issuers often pass over — the shopkeeper with real income and no salary slip, the applicant in a tier-2 city, the first-time cardholder with a thin file.

What a Small Finance Bank Card Is

The card works like any other. AU sets your limit, sends a monthly statement, charges interest on anything you carry, and reports to the credit bureaus.

The licence type changes who the bank is built to serve, not what the product does. Small finance banks were licensed to extend banking to underserved segments, and AU's lending history is in vehicle and small business finance. If your income is real but hard to document in the format a large private bank expects, that background is the practical difference.

Your credit report will not note that the card came from a small finance bank. A clean account here reads exactly like a clean account anywhere.

Where AU Is Worth a Look

  • Self-employed applicants get a fairer hearing. The bank's core business is lending to people without salary slips.
  • Lifetime-free variants are a real part of the range, not a single promotional card.
  • Reach into western and northern India is strong, reflecting where the bank grew.
  • Secured cards against a fixed deposit are straightforward here, which suits a thin file.

Worth knowing: a secured credit card is not a lesser product on your credit report. Bureaus record it as a credit card account like any other. Six to twelve months of clean use on a secured card is one of the fastest ways to build a file from nothing.

What Comes With It

  • Reward points or cashback, with higher rates in chosen categories
  • Lifetime-free options across part of the range
  • Fuel surcharge waiver within a monthly cap
  • EMI conversion on larger purchases
  • Lounge access on upper variants
  • Contactless payment, and UPI on RuPay variants

If you are self-employed, the business bank statement does most of the work. Keep business and personal money in separate accounts — mixed accounts are the single most common reason a genuinely creditworthy applicant gets declined.

What a Carried Balance Costs

Clear the statement total by the due date and the credit costs nothing. Pay less and interest applies to the whole balance, new purchases lose their interest-free period, and ATM cash charges interest immediately plus a fee.

Market card interest runs near 3.5% a month, roughly 42% a year. Your rate is on your statement.

Deepak's Shop, and Why Documents Decided It

Deepak runs a hardware shop with about ₹9 lakh of annual turnover. His income is genuine, but two large private banks declined his card application. He had no salary slip, and his business receipts landed in the same account as his household spending.

He fixed three things over four months, in this order:

What he didWhy it mattered
Opened a separate current account for the shopMade business income readable to a lender
Filed the pending year's ITRGave a documented income figure to assess
Took a secured card against a ₹25,000 depositStarted a card record on his bureau file

Ten months later, with a clean secured-card history and two years of returns, an unsecured card was straightforward. His income never changed. What changed was how readable it was.

If you are self-employed and getting declined, this is usually the sequence — not a better application, but better evidence.

Applying, Step by Step

  1. Check your free credit report and correct errors before applying.
  2. Separate business and personal banking if you are self-employed. Do this before you apply, not after a rejection.
  3. Get the ITR filed. Two years of returns is the usual expectation.
  4. Consider the secured route if your file is thin — it is faster than collecting rejections.
  5. Apply online or in branch, then complete video KYC.
  6. Activate within 30 days and set auto-debit for the statement total.

Where It Fits and Where It Does Not

Good fit

  • Self-employed applicants with real but undocumented-looking income
  • First-time cardholders with a thin credit file
  • Applicants in western and northern India
  • Anyone wanting a genuinely lifetime-free card

Poor fit

  • High spenders wanting a loaded premium card
  • Applicants wanting a specific co-branded partner card
  • Anyone needing wide branch coverage in the south or east
  • Anyone expecting a high first limit

Questions this page gets asked

Is AU a real bank?

Yes. AU Small Finance Bank holds an RBI banking licence in the small finance bank category, created to serve small businesses and underserved areas. It is regulated as a scheduled bank.

Is it easier to get a card here if I am self-employed?

Often, yes. The bank's core lending business is to people without salary slips, so ITR and business banking history are familiar evidence rather than an exception.

Does an AU card build credit like any other?

Yes. Bureaus record the account and your payments. The licence category makes no difference to how the history reads.

What if I have no credit history at all?

Take a secured card against a fixed deposit. Your deposit keeps earning, the card reports normally, and six to twelve months of clean use builds the file.

Why do I need a separate business account?

Because a mixed account makes your business income unreadable. A lender cannot tell turnover from household spending, and unreadable income gets declined even when it is strong.

Are AU cards free?

Several variants carry no annual fee. Interest, cash advance fees, late payment charges and GST still apply.

What if I am rejected?

Fix the evidence rather than reapplying. See what to do after a rejection.

If You Are Self-Employed, Start Here

  1. Open a separate current account for the business this month, and route receipts through it.
  2. File your returns. Two years of ITR turns "I earn well" into something a lender can act on.
  3. Take a secured card now rather than waiting. It builds history while you sort out the paperwork.

Most self-employed applicants are not declined for lack of income. They are declined for lack of evidence, and evidence takes months to build — so start it before you need the card.
