RBL punches well above its size in credit cards. The bank is mid-sized, but its card base is large — built by partnering with companies that already had millions of customers and distributing cards through them rather than through branches.
That model explains most of what you will notice: a card offered to you through a partner app, an application that never involved the bank's own website, and benefits tied to that partner. It also explains the risk, which is what happens when a partnership ends.
Who Actually Holds Your Card
This is the point most RBL cardholders are unclear on, so it is worth stating plainly.
RBL Bank issues the card. RBL sets your limit, sends the statement, charges the interest, and reports your payments to the credit bureaus. The partner whose name is on the card sells and services the relationship, and supplies the rewards programme. The partner is not lending you anything.
Practically, that means two places to look when something goes wrong, and it pays to know which one owns your problem. A billing dispute or an interest question belongs to RBL. A rewards question usually belongs to the partner.
Why the Partner Model Works for Customers
- Distribution reaches people branches do not. If you already use the partner's app, the card comes to you rather than the other way round.
- Approval is often quicker because the partner already holds a payment history on you.
- Entry cards are genuinely accessible, which suits applicants the large private banks decline.
- Rewards concentrate where you already spend, assuming the partner is somewhere you actually shop.
Worth knowing: if a co-branding partnership ends, your credit line does not vanish — the issuer continues the account. What can change is the rewards programme and the servicing app. Keep the issuer's own customer care number saved, not only the partner's.
What the Card Carries
- Reward points or cashback, weighted towards partner spending
- Fuel surcharge waiver within a monthly cap
- EMI conversion on larger purchases
- Lounge access on mid and upper variants, often spend-linked
- Milestone benefits at annual spending thresholds
- Contactless payment, and UPI on RuPay variants
What Decides Your Application
| Factor | What it decides | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Credit score | The first filter | 750+ is comfortable; entry cards go lower |
| Income | Limit and variant | Documented and steady |
| Partner history | Can shorten the process considerably | A clean record with the partner platform |
| Existing EMIs | Repayment room | Clear a small loan first |
| Employment type | Which documents apply | Salaried: slips. Self-employed: two years of ITR |
| Location | Servicing coverage | Branch network is smaller than the majors' |
Card-specific requirements sit on RBL Bank's own site, or inside the partner app if that is where the card is offered.
Documents to Have Ready
| Document | Salaried | Self-employed |
|---|---|---|
| PAN | Required | Required |
| Aadhaar or other KYC | Required | Required |
| Address proof | Required | Required |
| Income proof | Recent salary slips | ITR, usually two years |
| Bank statements | 3–6 months | 6–12 months |
Where the card is offered through a partner you already use, some of this may be pre-filled. Check what was submitted on your behalf — it is your application and your credit report either way.
The Cost of Carrying a Balance
Pay the statement in full by the due date and the credit costs nothing. Pay less and interest applies to the whole balance, new purchases lose their interest-free window, and cash withdrawals charge interest from day one plus a fee.
Market card interest sits near 3.5% a month, about 42% a year. Your rate is on your statement.
Kavita's Two Apps, One Missed Due Date
Kavita took an RBL co-branded card through a shopping app she uses every week. She managed the card entirely inside that app, which showed her rewards and her outstanding balance.
In one month the app displayed her balance but she missed the due date by nine days, because the reminder she relied on came from the partner and not from the bank.
| What happened | Cost |
|---|---|
| Late payment charge | As per schedule of charges |
| Interest on ₹22,000 balance at 3.5% | ₹770 |
| Interest-free period on new purchases | Suspended until cleared |
| Reported to credit bureaus | Only if 30+ days late — she avoided this |
She was lucky on the last line. Payments are generally reported as delinquent once they cross 30 days past due, and a single such entry sits on your report for years.
The fix took two minutes: she set an auto-debit with RBL directly, for the full statement amount, and stopped depending on the partner app for the one thing that actually matters.
How to Apply
- Read your free credit report and correct errors first.
- Decide whether the partner matches your spending. If not, a general card elsewhere will serve you better.
- Apply through the partner app or RBL directly. Either way, RBL is your issuer.
- Complete KYC, by video where offered.
- Save RBL's own customer care number, not just the partner's.
- Activate within 30 days, then set auto-debit with the bank for the full statement.
The Honest Balance
Works for you
- Reachable for applicants the large private banks decline
- Application often quicker through a partner you already use
- Rewards land where you already spend
- Builds credit history exactly like any other card
Works against you
- Two entities to deal with, and it is not always clear which owns your issue
- Benefits can change if the partnership does
- Smaller branch network for in-person servicing
- Managing the card only inside the partner app invites missed due dates
RBL Against the Others

| HDFC Bank | Widest choice of variants | Harder entry without a relationship |
| AU Small Finance | Self-employed and thin files | Smaller premium range |

Questions this page gets asked
Who is my credit card actually with?
RBL Bank. The partner brand on the card sells and services the relationship and runs the rewards, but RBL issues the credit, charges the interest and reports to the bureaus.
What happens if the partnership ends?
Your credit line continues with RBL. The rewards programme and the servicing app can change, and the issuer will notify you of changes to terms.
Should I pay through the partner app?
You can, but set an auto-debit with RBL for the full statement as well. Relying on a partner app's reminder is a common route to a missed due date.
When does a late payment hit my credit report?
Generally once it crosses 30 days past due. A few days late costs you a fee and interest; thirty days late costs you years of record.
What credit score do I need?
No published cut-off, and it varies by variant. 750 and above is comfortable, and entry variants are reachable below that.
Is RBL a safe bank for a card?
It is a scheduled commercial bank regulated by the RBI. As with any card, the money flows from you to the bank, so the practical questions are service, terms and rewards.
Rejected — what next?
Do not reapply straight away. Find the reason, fix it, wait. See what to do after a rejection.
Three Things to Set Up on Day One
- Auto-debit with RBL for the full statement amount, not the minimum, and not only inside the partner app.
- Save the bank's own customer care number, so a billing dispute does not start with the wrong company.
- Check where your rewards actually land and whether you would spend them there.
A partner card is a good deal when the partner is genuinely part of your month. The one habit that decides whether it stays a good deal is paying the statement in full, and that belongs to the bank, not the app.
