Kotak runs a smaller card lineup than HDFC or SBI, and that is the point. Instead of forty variants, you get a shorter list with less overlap — which makes choosing easier if you are getting your first card and do not want to compare reward charts for an hour.
The other thing worth knowing: Kotak's digital savings account is the usual doorway. Open one, let a few months of activity build, and the card conversation gets much shorter.
A Shorter List, on Purpose
The product is the same as anywhere: a revolving credit line, a monthly statement, free borrowing if you clear it in full, expensive borrowing if you do not.
What differs at Kotak is choice architecture. A narrower range means fewer near-identical cards competing for the same wallet, so the decision comes down to two or three real options rather than a spreadsheet. For a first-time cardholder that is an advantage, not a limitation.
The trade-off is at the top end. If you spend enough to want a heavily loaded premium card, the larger issuers have more to offer.
Why Kotak Suits First Cards
- Entry variants are properly entry-level. Low or waivable fees, aimed at people building a record rather than optimising rewards.
- The digital account is a real route in. A Kotak savings account with a few months of activity gives the bank something to judge you on besides a thin credit file.
- Fewer decisions. A shorter lineup means less chance of picking a card whose benefits you never use.
- Secured cards against a fixed deposit are available if your score is the blocker.
What Comes With the Card
- Reward points or cashback, with higher earning in chosen categories
- Fuel surcharge waiver within a monthly cap
- EMI conversion on larger purchases
- Lounge access on upper variants
- Contactless payment, and UPI on RuPay variants
- Add-on cards billed to the primary holder
Worth knowing: a first card almost always comes with a lower limit than applicants expect. That is not a judgement on you — it is standard for a thin file. Six months of clearing the statement in full is usually enough to ask for an increase.
What Kotak Looks At
| Factor | What it decides | What helps |
|---|---|---|
| Credit score | Whether you clear the first filter | 750+ is comfortable; entry cards go lower |
| Income | Your limit and variant | Documented and steady beats large and irregular |
| Kotak relationship | How much evidence the bank has | A savings account with real activity counts |
| Existing EMIs | Remaining repayment room | Clear a small loan before applying |
| Employment type | Which documents apply | Salaried: slips. Self-employed: two years of ITR |
| Credit history length | How much record there is to read | A secured card builds it from nothing |
Income requirements belong to the specific card. Check yours on Kotak's own site. We do not reprint issuer figures because they change.
Documents to Gather
| Document | Salaried | Self-employed |
|---|---|---|
| PAN | Required | Required |
| Aadhaar or other KYC | Required | Required |
| Address proof | Required | Required |
| Income proof | Recent salary slips | ITR, usually two years |
| Bank statements | 3–6 months | 6–12 months |
What Carrying a Balance Costs
Clear the statement total by the due date and the credit is free. Pay less and interest applies to the whole balance, new purchases lose their interest-free period, and ATM cash charges interest from the withdrawal day plus a fee.
Market card interest runs near 3.5% a month, roughly 42% a year. Your card's exact rate is on your statement and in the schedule of charges.
Sameer's First Card, Month One
Sameer gets his first card with a ₹60,000 limit. In month one he spends ₹18,000 — a phone upgrade and everyday bills. The statement shows ₹18,000 due, minimum ₹900.
| Pays ₹18,000 | Pays ₹900 | |
|---|---|---|
| Balance carried | ₹0 | ₹17,100 |
| Interest at 3.5% | ₹0 | ₹599 |
| Interest-free period next month | Yes | No |
| Owed next month | ₹0 | ₹17,699 |
The second column is the trap for a first cardholder. Not the ₹599 — that is survivable. The real cost is line three: from that point, every new purchase starts accruing interest immediately, so the next month's bill is worse than it looks.
One clean month is what sets the habit. Clear the first statement in full, even if it means postponing the phone.
How to Apply
- Read your free credit report and correct anything wrong before you apply.
- If you have no Kotak relationship, consider opening the savings account first and letting it run a few months.
- Pick from the short list — with fewer variants this takes minutes, not an evening.
- Apply online or in branch, then complete video KYC where offered.
- Track using the reference number rather than submitting a second application.
- Activate within 30 days and set auto-debit for the statement total, not the minimum.

Questions this page gets asked
Is Kotak good for a first credit card?
It is a reasonable choice. The lineup is short enough to compare quickly, entry variants carry low or waivable fees, and secured cards are available if your score is thin.
Do I need a Kotak account to get the card?
Not strictly, but it helps a great deal. Without a relationship the bank has only your credit report and documents to judge you on.
What score do I need?
No published cut-off, and it varies by variant. 750 and above is comfortable; entry cards go lower, and a secured card is reachable with almost any score.
Why is my limit so low?
First limits are set on a thin file, not on your worth. Clear the statement in full for six months and then ask for an increase.
How does a secured credit card work here?
You place a fixed deposit and the card is issued against it. The deposit keeps earning interest, and the card reports to the bureaus exactly like an unsecured one.
How long does approval take?
Usually a few working days for a fresh application, faster if you are an existing customer, plus one to three weeks for delivery.
What if I am rejected?
Do not reapply straight away — each attempt is a hard enquiry. Find the reason and fix it. See what to do after a rejection.
Your Next Three Steps
- Check your free credit report and clear up errors before applying anywhere.
- If your file is thin, open the savings account or take a secured card rather than collecting rejections.
- Set auto-debit for the full statement the day the card activates, and leave it that way.
A first card is not about rewards. It is about building six clean months of history, which is what every better card later will look at.
